    Other Web (Mostly Resources)

    Art/Animation Resources

  • Animation Obsessive Newsletter - Great journalism on animation, including obscure animation, as well as a focus on world animation. The Sunday issues are free and I highly recommend them. Thursday issues are smaller and for paid subscribers, but I've always enjoyed those as well.
  • Warrior Painters - Community for plein air painting, very approachable for beginners. Their Discord community is nice.
  • Walt Stanchfield Handouts - PDFs of handouts the late Walt Stanchfield used in his classes.
  • Jaykittens' Background Q&A - A 35-page Google Doc broken up into 4 sections of tips on drawing backgrounds ranging from beginner level to putting together a portfolio. This really inspired me to try backgrounds, as someone who shies away from them in illustration.
  • Settei Dreams - Anime production materials.
  • Draw a Box - Resource for free drawing lessons. They have their own Discord group for peer feedback as well.
  • Andrew Loomins' Books - Great guides on figure drawing that are still widely in use today. They are in the public domain.

  • Toniko Pantoja's YouTube Channel - A great resource for those pursuing animation or story art. I always learn a lot from his vids.
  • Bobby Chiu's YouTube Channel and New Schoolism Channel - Lots of good videos here. Interviews with artists and old life drawing streams. Bobby also runs the Schoolism website and Lightbox Expo. Here are free playlists of recorded Lightbox Expo lectures from 2020, 2021, and 2022.
  • Nickelodeon's "Animation 101" playlist - Lots of insight into the production pipeline of TV animation and the expectations of specific jobs.

  • Featured Character - "...someone's original character is featured every 48 hours. Everyone will have the chance to create art of this character and be entered by a randomized raffle to have their own character featured for the next round." I played this game for a while last year and had fun!
  • Art Fight - Art trading game that occurs annually in July.
  • Software and Such:
